After my husband fell 12 ft doctors ordered a MRI and said he had a stress fracture of the L5. Then they ordered a bone scan said it was an old stress fracture and workmens comp would not pay to repair the stress fracture. I have read all kinds of articles on a bone scan and have found no evidence that age of a stress fracture is determined just that there is a stress fracture. Can you lets us know if the age of the stress fracture can be determined? Thanks.

i believe that bone scans read the amount of heat/energy released from the site as it's healing. an old fracture would have less light up from the fracture site than a new fracture.

A lot of times the test will come back "compression fracture of indeterminate age". There can be bony clues to make it seem older, and there are often soft tissue clues if it's acute.
