I know this won a Best-Picture Oscar, but if you're going to do a period film, why put it (and its soundtrack) 20 years out of date? The big store flourished in the pre-Great War years, and in a "right" town -- one where the police could be bribed and counted on to try to cool down a mark -- the store was a permanent set-up, and a good inside man could play a dozen marks marks a day, brought in by ropers (not coincidentally, Redford's name in the movie) from all over the country, by appointment.
No one would ever have spent all that money to set up a store for a single, doubtful score. Certainly not in 1935. This gross misdating is a real shame, since most of the other details on the wire are authentic, though they would not all have been used in a single play.
