The US is responsable for a large amount of carbon emissions and yet it has remained the least willing to co-operate in trying to stop climate change.

Why has the US been so reluctant to agree to cut back on emissions? and now they are finally addressing the issue what can be done to stop the increasing rate of climate change?

Well, that is not entirely true. China opens, on average, 10 new coal-run factories every day which emits many more toxic fumes than America. Did you also know that 20 percent of all emissions come from livestock in New Zealand and that when Mt. Vesuvius erupted, it spewed more gases and fumes than all of humankind has in its entirety? I do not believe that driving a hybrid car or using florescent light bulbs will reduce global warming. However, I do think that we should take care of our environment and not dump waste in our oceans, but until the politicians and celebrities start riding bicycles to work and stop jet setting around the world, I will continue to drive my Chevy and blast the air conditioner.

The problem is that the company's that this will effect are some of the richest company's whose owners are good buddy's with the law makers on capitol hill. It is going to be very hard to change industries to lower emissions because, frankly those people are so wealthy, all they car about is the money they are making. They are not addressing the issues merely putting up a front that they care to quiet down the people who actually do care. I am sorry to be so pessimistic but seriously look at who you are asking to change there ways and then look at how these changes are going to affect their pocket books. I am with you though we need change.

are you reffering to the refusal to ratify the Kyoto protocal? If so you should know that that was specifically written to cripple the American economy...the US is one of the world leaders in new technology to reduce emmissions...and to answer your question...NOTHING can be done to stop the increasing rate of climate change..the damage is done...and it didn't happen overnight or even in the last decade..it has been ongoing since the start of the industrial revolution..what needs to happen is that ALL countries (even China and India which are exempt from Kyoto restrictions) need to develop and use reduced emmision power plants...but good luck on that

First of all because the Kyoto Treaty would require the US to reduce its emmissions by a larger % than the % of emmissions they produce. Secondly because there is no scientifically peer reviewed evidence that show to what extent Global Warming is actually influenced by man just opinion. If there was proof the latest UN Commission report wouldn't say we are 90% sure, it would state that it is a fact. It does not make sense to make knee jerk reactions based on opinion.
