What a person earns should be a combination of what their skills are, how in demand those skills are, how much those skills are worth to an employer. In other words, it should be between the employer and the employee. Don't like what is being offered? Don't take the job. Simple as that.

It would have the effect of people working for sweat-shop pay in areas with low unemployment or in rural areas without many job opportunities.

Then there would be more unemployment.

Minimum wage is there to stop employers from taking advantage of working people, the minimum wage is not very high but it ensures that the worker can work and pay taxes and afford the cost of living etc.

If there were 3 jobs going and the employers should pay $10 an hour but because there is no minimum wage they were only paying $2 an hour then the employee wouldn't really have a choice.

One good reason why a minimum wage might be desirable for society, is that when a person earns less than the cost of living, that person must be desperate. Desperation is fear. Fear makes people do things that defy common sense. There is a reasonable presumption that when an employee keeps a job because of desperation, there is likely to be some kind of force or extortion involved. In other words, it's likely to be borderline slavery, not an economically sound employment agreement made between parties who are both completely free to make their own decisions.

If it really made sense to let people decide to accept subminimum wages, why should it not also make sense to let children decide whether they wanted to live with their parents or not? If true freedom means being able to make our own decisions always, with no government interference at all, should that freedom not be available to everyone?

So it's not a simple issue of freedom vs government interference. Society has accepted the idea that some people need to be protected from their own folly. Children need to be guided for their own safety. People who accept subminimum wages need guidance too, because a subminimum wage job is a road to disaster, as the cost of living makes the person gradually poorer and poorer.

I think you should consider your question and what our as in USA has done to recently with all the trade agreements.. As workforce america realizes that our jobs have up and left the USA for other countries that do not have these laws and do not have regard for human life as we do. These manufacturing companies can hire people to do the jobs that we do for pennies a day. No reguard of safely. no osha Because they know that there is no competition or other work. availible. what would you do to feed your family.. Education doesn't come cheap.. some have no options. Companies will pay as little as they can get away with. If you think minimum wage doesn't help what do you think about making 2$. how would you know where to start someone with educatoin maybe they would start out alot lower pay too.

hmmm frank b., you must never have been down on your luck. sometimes it's not so simple to not take a job. there are people out there in this big world of ours that are barely making ends meet, and have to put food on the table one way or the other. we need a minimum wage so employers don't cheap out on their workers, because not all people care about how great one's skills are. some people only care about getting wealthy and staying wealthy. we also need the minimum wage because not all employers are well off, but need workers. so, all they can offer is minimum wage. you really can't be serious when asking this question, can you?

What an assainine question. Theree NEEDS to be a minimum wage for the fact that, if there wasn't EVERY company out there would offer nothing for pay. And there are those people that would HAVE to take those jobs in order to TRY TO provide for their families.

This day and age there really shouldn't be a minimum wage. It's an economic farce made up by democrats to try to make people fell better.

This day and age, minimum wage is reserved for teens. I pay my cleaning lady more than minumum wage.

Oh, and to answer the guy above, if that's what he really thinks, he has a pathetic view of the labor force. There's a little thing these days called the laws of supply and demand that completely counteract what he's saying.

If you don't feel like you are making enough money, quit and go somewhere where you will make more. If enough people leave, the company that is underpaying people will either close or increase wages.... It's really that simple..

The only way a person is trapped in a low paying job is because of they're own ineptitude.

Without a minimum wage, I believe employers would take advantage by offering lower wages and banding together.

There shouldn't. If a company pays below market value wages they will not be able to retain decent employees and will go under. If they cannot afford to pay a decent wage then their product or service is not in great demand. A minimum wage does away with any incentive to go out and develop skills to make yourself a worthwhile, valuable employee.

If there wasn't a minimum wage then every business would want to pay a penny an hour to everyone.
