Very simply, they can communicate and their parents (and teachers) cannot understand them.
This seems to happen every generation. Look a the Beatniks, the 70's children, and those that Aristotle complained several thousand years ago. Children rebel against their parents values.

I think because it is faster. like instead of emailing vs. instent messageing. Not all kids/teens text message none of my friends have it.... because our parents think we will run up the bill.

It's quicker, easier, more practical, and it takes up less space to us shorter words when texting which inevitably saves money
