There is nothing wrong with text messaging but it is important that youngsters know how to spell and write proper sentences. The general standard of English on Yahoo answers is extremely poor and most certainly a cause for worry if this is a true reflection of the educational standards in schools today.

Lets start by addressing the fact that you use the term "youngsters" haha. People of ALL ages are using text messages now, not just teens.
I don't think text messaging is really a problem. As a student and a full time employee, sometimes I cannot pick up my phone during meetings or lectures, and text messages are perfect. I really don't think text messages are going to have a huge negative effect on youth. In fact, people are communicating more with each other now (thanks to text messages and e-mail) then ever before. I think the problem people are having with text messages has more to do with the abbreviations then anything. Sometimes it is a lot easier to type "u" rather then you... or LOL to show that you're laughing. People today are all about convenience and text messages and e-mail are just more convenient and gets the messages across. :)

I think text messaging is a great way of communication.. I think the short hand should only be used in text and instant messages, or in email. Text messaging can however teach kids bad habits but i dont think it really affects PROPER writing.

It's great that they're learning the technology early. It will definitely be a part of their world.
Its important though to make sure they can communicate clearly to everyone. One thing I ask my kids to do is to write letters regularly to their grandparents and other relatives.
Being able to think clearly and communicate those thoughts clearly are important skills whether its through traditional writing or text messages.

Text messaging, in and of itself, is fine. It's a useful communications mechanism and, by necessity, has a shorthand. Nothing wrong with that.
However, too many people today think that it's acceptable to use this shorthand in other forms of written (and even verbal!) conversation.
It is not acceptable, in my opinion, to use "u" for "you" or say "lol" outside of text messaging and taking personal notes.
