Don't marry him because you clearly are paranoid and don't trust him!!!!

Don't make his life miserable. You can still be the crazy cat lady WITHOUT him.

The recommendation of "county clerk" works that some people gave you only if you know which county (or counties) the person lived in. If s/he moved around a lot, you will have to ask a lot of different clerks. And many counties expect you to appear in person. And even if you do all the travelling and paying of fees, you could still be fooled by tactics like name changes, marriage abroad, etc. And finally ... there's the old "marriage in Vegas" thing (you will certainly have to call the courthouse there, and in Reno, and in Niagara, and in ... forget it).

A more promising method is to use the resources of a professional search database (see a few links in the attached). I've used some of these databases to perform background checks on people I was hiring. They're pretty good and their fees are reasonable. Not cheap, but cheaper than falling for a marriage swindler.

Only watchout: these databases only access US records. If you have reasons to suspect that the person you are interested in may have been married outside the US, you will likely have to hire a PI and pay big bucks.

I agree with the comment made above - if you don't trust a person, don't marry him/her. However, some people are just awfully good at fooling others. I am assuming you have a specific reason to ask the question?

I went through this before with someone, and found out he had been married! I just called the local court house from the area he was from, and asked questions. Sure enough, the good oh computer brought up all the info. Or if he talks about Las Vegas, or Reno-same difference. Marriages are public information. You just have to get someone on the other side of the phone in a good mood, willing to look up the info for ya!

You can hire a private investigator to find out the information for you (which may be a little expensive - my wife works for a private investigator), or, depending on where you live, you can go to your local Hall of Records, County Clerk's office, or Courthouse and look it up on their computer (usually for free) as long as you have the first and last name of the person in question. Contrary to what someone else stated, you do not need to know their birthdate; however, if the person in question has a common last name, then a birthdate may be helpful in identifying that person. If it was a confidential marriage, you will not be able access that information.

In the USA, you would have to go to the Hall of Records in the County where you believe the person was married and/or divorced. Also, you will need identifying information... person's full name, date of birth.

In some states, there are "confidential marriages," in which case the only persons who can access the marriage record is the bride or groom.

Just order the divorce records from the court/city where he was divorced. It's public information.

They are public records in the county where they lived/filed the divorce/had it finalized.

Walk in and look at them in the clerk's office; free to look. Probably .50 a page to copy.
