What is the point of the letter X?

The only two words with the letter X in them is X-Ray and Xylophone, isn't it kind of a waste of a letter?

In days gone by, people that could not write their name on legal documents were instructed to make the X mark . Beside the X mark witnesses would also sign that the X was the mark of the person.
On some legal papers the instructions will still state to sign by the X.

Not only are there many other words that begin with "x", but "x" is also used frequently in the middle of words (like exclamation and Mexico). It most often makes the "ks" sound in English, and in many languages it is used to render foreign sounds that are unknown in the native language.

My dictionary has at least 100 words starting with A with an X in it. There are thousands of words with X.

Well, you are quite wrong in saying there are only two words with 'x' in them - if I may eXpress my opinion in such an eXtraordinary way, Without x we could not call the ladies in our lives Xantippe - a scolding or quarrelsome woman. Nor could we consider eXtracting Xanthic acid. We would be unable to call people xenophobic. How could we have strobe lights without Xenon? Of course, the ancient Greeks could have well done without Xerxes, but required Xenophon to write their history. And where would surgeons be without their xysters? And where would scholars be if they did not have to face eXaminations?
