I know, this is a morbid question. I don't actually have a corpse on my hands, I'm just wondering. Say gramps passes away in his sleep, and you find him the next morning. If he's obviously dead, calling 911 is a waste of emergency resources. Whom should you call instead?

You call your local police precinct (using their regular number, NOT 911). Who willl send someone out to assess the situation and he will call in the paramedics to pronounce death. They in turn will call in the coroner. It is HIS decision as to whether the death was from natural causes or not.

If the coroner finds no questionable circumstances, the paramedics will call in the funeral home of your choice to pick up the body.

The coroner and the paramedics will leave one after the other. The cop will stick around until the funeral home shows up, just to lend you moral support.

You call 911 either way- The ambulance will come and take your gramps to the Morgue, unless you want to load him in your car and take him there yourself. Emergency Operators can call the Appropriate people without tying up phone lines for too long. You'd be surprised by the kind of calls 911 operators get...People lost and looking for directions, even asking instructions on cooking a turkey... your dead gramps is worth the call. :)

You may not view this as an item of concern for the emergency medical people--- but they have a different take on it !!
Call the 911 number and THEY will deal with the absolute everythng from there !!

Since your dead gramps (???) is not worthy (to you) of a 911 call, you can get and save the "non-emergency" number and keep it on the fridge, in case gramps kicks the bucket,,,

Call the non emergency number for the police. The will call the coroner, who will call the funeral home. You still need a death certificate from the coroner.

If you know which funeral home, you can call them direct in many states to come pick up gramps. They will have the coroner come to the parlor.

Calling 911 is the appropriate course of action. Be sure to inform the operator that he is most clearly dead and they will send the appropriate services. It is only a waste of resources if you misuse 911.

I agree with alwaysmoose. If one finds a member of one's family, or anyone else for that matter, deceased unexpectedly, one should call 911 first, and allow them to determine what should be done. There may be state laws which must be observed before a body can be touched or removed, depending on the circumstances of death and the medical history of the deceased.

It is a police call, not necessarily 911, but you can use that line without reprimand from most departments for this purpose.

A sworn peace officer is needed to secure the scene and make sure state and local laws regarding untimely death are followed. It's not a waste of police resources, it's a requirement of the police to perform that duty.

I think you call 911, it's not like you are calling and pranking them, that is a waste of emergency resources.

911 is the place to call. A dead guy IS an emergency. They would contact the proper department for that.
