Medicinal substances, whether they are prescription meds, OTC drugs, or herbal formulas, impact the body's physiology.

Why would a person take a medicinal substance without knowing if it is right for them and their health problem?

Why do people assume that if a little works well then a lot will work great?

Why would a person take any medicinal substance without consulting a certified professional first?

I beliieve people think that, if it wasn't necessary for a doctor to prescribe a medication, then it must be safer to use than prescription medications. Of course, they forget that OTC drugs that are commonly used today were once, themselves, prescription drugs, and that some pharmaceuticals are made from plants. So, it is out of ignorance that people think OTCs and herbs should be treated as "safe" to do what you please with them. (If anyone else is reading this, please note that it is possible to overdose on OTCs, so it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label--unless prescribed otherwise by a medical doctor.)

The dangers of prescription drugs are either more well known, more severe, or more prone to abuse/addiction. That is why they are prescription to begin with. While OTC drugs/herbs can have side effects, they are usually not severe or life threatening when taking the recommended dosage. However, your point about people assuming the little works, a lot is better, is valid. Sometimes people don't need what they're taking at all and its just a waste. But their ignorance is their own personal responsibility, and if they cant follow simple directions on the container then thats their problem and a visit to the MD over supplements, while recommended, is often more hassle and cost than its worth.

Overall, its best to make an informed decision when taking supplements, herbs, and other OTC medication. Its up to the person to decide how much information they need.

You are making many assumptions.

Not all people treat them differently. And many people are very responsible with them. Has someone in your circle upset you by their reaction to OTC's, herbals, or prescriptions?

I have taken all three in my life that you mention ...under the care of doctors and I never thought 'if a little works well, then a lot will work great".

All I can 'guess' from your questions is whoever you are talking about maybe feels frustrated because they aren't getting the proper care they need and have decided to take their health in to their own hands... people do it all the time...some people research the heck out of things and make proper decisions...and those that just take stuff because it's there...those are the ones you should worry about.

Good luck....

Sorry, too many questions. Try asking one at a time. I don't want to write a book in here.
