I am american..my heritage is Italian but I am 3rd generation American with no family left in Italy so as far as I am concerned I am AMERICAN! I am married to a 1st generation Italian who didnt even know english until he started kindergarten, and they make the homemade wine and hang prosciuttos in the basement and can their own tomatoes etc etc..so I am being drawn into that culture more and its is very nice to see what my heritage is really about. Mostly peasants, farmers but great food, wine and a strong family tie. So I have the best of both..but if I had to choose I'd be American over anything else in the world!

Many of us do. I'm German-American, studied German language and literature. I've also studied the contributions to our country by those of German descent--from John Jacob Astor to Herbert Hoover to Babe Ruth, as well as the contributions from those of other heritages. For many of us of European descent, we came over many years ago (my closest German ancestor came over as an infant before the Civil War) that some do not realize it. I ask my students where their ancestors are from, and I'm lucky if some can tell me the state--just from 'back east' or 'down south'. I generally don't choose to 'hyphenate', as once I leave this nation I am just plain American.

My heritage is American. That's what I take pride in. I don't see myself as a "hyphenated" American.
I studied world history in college. And though I found it very interesting, there's more than enough here in the U.S. for me to learn about. But thanks for asking.
