We can block everyone, just say no, or refuse to answer. Different from real life, isn't it? Problem or not?

No, it is difficult because you can't see or feel the other person's presence and hear the other person's voice. Social psychologists say that women find conversations other the phone more difficult then men do. I know men who feel the same way as women about this. If it is harder to build a relationship on the phone, it would make sense that it is even harder on the net. As long as you have friends you can actually be with I don't think you have a problem with having friends on the net. They will not be as good, but they can still be fun and important in your life.

You can block people, say no, and refuse to answer in real life too. (Have done that many a time.)

Friendships on the Internet can be as deep or superficial as we allow it to be. I've formed some wonderful and long-lasting friendships and some deeply superficial friendships on the net and in real life. The nature of the interaction may be somewhat different (although with voice chat, webcams, etc. it's become more and more "real"), but I think we use the same types of interpersonal skills and I don't think it's as easy to distinguish relationships in these areas as we'd like for it to be.

That's because in real life you can see who you are talking to. Usually, you meet people in a public place where they can't really do what they can do online. Online, they can hide who they are, use a made up persona and devise very horrible things to do to you from the privacy of their own computer screen. But in real life you can see if that person is who they really say they are because in real life a 60 year old man can't tell you he's a 19 year old girl and expect you to believe him. Nor can said person flash you naked pictures of himself and just get away with it in real life.

Depends. There are so many superficial people out there but some genuine one's too. I met my wife on the internet and moved from rainy Manchester, England to a wonderful life in sunny Arizona.

I'm sure you have responses about lies but the advantage to the web is that I CAN TELL YOU THE TRUTH because i don't know you and my answer can never be used against me in any way ( and how many people dare that in real life )

AND it works both ways people can explore things here ( at least talk about them ) that they would not dare in real life - any fantasy or thought is fair game here ( try that with your real life friends ) the disadvantage of course is it IS NOT REAL LIFE !

I think it's better for some of these people than nothing! Some of them are handicapped or stuck at home. There are retired people who want human-interaction too. I love Answers. I don't know what the hell it is for, but it suits me to think we all need each other. That helps me put the groceries up and let the dogs out!! It beats nothing for some very good and worth-knowing people. I'd hate to miss this. @8-)

In some ways it's a lot better, you can have interesting conversations all around the world without paying a ton of cash. However it lacks intimacy which no amount of webcams can ever change that.

"fiendship" is pretty easy, I make enemies every day posting sarcastic remarks on websites and have gained quite a fiend some repuation on YouTube for it.

One of the major benefits of using the internet is tht people can try on different roles, while one of the major disadvantages of it is that you never really know who it is you're talking to. It's much easier for people to lie.

Not really. The net is not superficial, people are and what you describe is also in person to person contact.
