take it to a store like kay jewelers. i used to work there. they have diamond testers, a little probe thing that when it touches the diamond it will make sound if it is a diamond. you can also tell by using a microscope, and sometimes you can even tell with the naked eye--a diamond usually will have inclusions or flaws, unless it is a very high end diamond, then it's harder to tell.

p.s. they will not charge you to see if the diamond is real or not.

Ask your mother. Since she is the one that bought it she should be able to tell you. The 14k isn't the diamond, it is the gold. So the diamond may not be real, it could be a cubic zirconia. But to make sure just ask your mother if the diamond is real. You shouldn't care what the kid next to you is saying, tell him that you love your ring regardless!

Going to a pawn shop is not a good idea. They are there to make money so even if your ring is valuable they will tell you its worth less so they can buy it and resell it. Go to a reputable Jewelry shop and have it appraised also check the diamonds out for serial numbers etched onto them

Great advice. That's the only way you'll know for sure. Take it to the jeweler they can tell you if it's real and how much it's worth. Then you'll know for sure and how much to insure it for.

Diamonds, Cubic Zirconium, Glass.... they all look nice in a good mounting, even the Industrial/ Cultured or Man made if you prefer.

Jeweler by far is your best bet for what it is.

they make fake diamonds that will scratch glass now a days, so you can't use that test alone. some of them, the only way to tell is to heat test them. go to a jewler.

That's all she can do, because with some of the newer zirconia only a jeweller can tell.

Take it to a jewler to get it appraised but until you have time to do that, scratch it with glass and if it scratches then its most likely real

an edge of a real diamond will scratch glass - though that doesn't tell you anything about the quality of the diamond- but find a mirror or pane of glass you don't care about scratching and see if it can scratch it easily...

Yes, take it to a jewelry appraiser. It's worth the cost.

You can either take it to a jeweler to get it appraised or see if it scratches glass. If it does, then its real.
