My sister-in-law asked me something that I had no knowledge on and is also curious about.
Here goes.....
If you have a tatoo on your lower back, can you or can you not get the epidural ansethesia?!
She just found out that she was pregnant and I will be trying to come out pregnant. We both have a tatoo on our lower back.
She heard that if you have a tatoo on your lower back, and if you want to get the epidural, they won't give it to you.
TRUE... OR FALSE?????
If so... why?

I don't see that harm in it. I've looked up some information about this and I have attached the link for you. This link pretty much states that it shouldn't be a problem and that you can it can be done safely. I have 2 tattoos on my side and I was able to get the epidural.

Apparently it depends upon where the tattoo is because my cousin couldn't have an epidural because of her tattoo on her lower back. I know there is a specific place where the epidural goes so maybe hers was in the way no matter where they put it. So, it sounds like they won't do it over the top of the tattoo.

I have my tattoo on my lower back ... and I had the epidural with my third child. I loved it. I have never heard anything like that before ... it is news to me ... cause like I said I had my epidural 2 years ago ... and my tattoo in that spot since I was 18.

So to answer your question ... it is False.

I have a tattoo on my lower back and had an epidural. There's no problem with having one. They insert the needle just like they would if you didn't have one. It's a very small needle and doesn't distort the tattoo either.

As long as you've had it for a while (it's not fresh) then yes, you can get an epidural.

Here is a link to the mayo clinic:

I've never heard of that. The only reason I would guess that would be true is maybe cause they can't see the vein or whatever they look for cause of the ink in the tattoo.

False, they just won't do it through an active infection
