Ask him a question about something he knows about, football, school, whatever. It's a good way to break the ice. Just happen to be near him and then, as though it is on the spur of the moment, say : "you know a lot about (whatever, football, sport, ........), can you tell me ......... and then your question, whatever it is.
First of all you have flattered him by saying he knows a lot about something, so he will willingly answer (every man loves to be thought of as intelligent and knowledgeable), you've broken the ice and when he replies, you can then respond with another question or continue the conversation.
Try it. It is the greatest ice-breaker ever, just ask him a question but make sure he's not with his mates, so you have his full attention. And when he is replying to you, look him in the eyes and smile prettily.
