My son has dropped his many times. Especially off his bed which is a highish cabin bed and its still fine! He doesn't have a cover on either. It sounds as though you had a dodgy one, I would email or contact Sony explaining your problem. It is a lot of money to shell out if its not sufficiently resilient. Taking it back to Toys R Us is trying to get blood out of a stone, their customer service is terrible.

I feel really bad about this. What I would try to do contact the customer relations person at Sony. I think if you explain to them how your son loves his SONY Psp and you really cant afford to buy him a new they may replace it free or perhaps repair it cheap. Make sure you talk to customer relations though.
Explain you know its your fault but you were kind of hoping Sony would assist you with this.
Other than that, maybe check on ebay and see if you can buy a used one at a cheaper price. I bet someone would even buy yours for parts.
I hope everything works out for you.

yeah, psp's do not strike me as very durable and it doesn't surprise me that it is having problems. Sorry to hear about that. Maybe you can get something else, like a nintendo ds lite.
