I teach 5th grade in the US. I would like to get a British social studies\history book for comparison (from the same grade level). Actually, I wouldn't mind having a German one too, but I assume it would be in German, and wouldn't do me any good. Anyways, since I have no idea who publishes textbooks in Britain, any leads, titles, etc. would be helpful. Thanks.

5th grade corresponds to Year 6 here (ages 10-11). It's the last year of primary school, and also the final year of National Curriculum Key Stage 2 (KS2) which sets out roughly what kids should be learning from ages 7-11.

For books, have a look at Folens http://www.folens.com/ which is good for primary school publishing. History books for this age tend to be individual 'topic books' rather than year-long textbooks. The 'History in Action' books actually do cover a whole year, though they're teachers' books with resources to photocopy, not textbooks as such. If anything here is of interest, see if it's sold on http://www.amazon.co.uk/ where it will probably be cheaper/available 2nd-hand ;)

Another history series is 'Explore History' published by Heinemann, which you can find on UK Amazon. These are topic books again - popular topics for later primary school seem to be Ancient Greece, Tudors, and Victorians.

A few other textbook publishers are: Hodder Murray, Pearson, Nelson Thornes, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press. Websites might be worth a look, though I think most focus more on secondary than primary schools.

Should add that above applies to England and Wales - Scotland has a different education system.

Can't teach ya German I'm afraid, but hope this helps!

You may want to try Abebooks.com, they have a lot of sources for their books, and you can search by subject, title, author, ISBN, and such. Good Luck in you hunting.
