Our Campbell's Russiian dwarf hamster was just diagnosed last night by the vet with Cushing's. We may have a few more with it too. The vet however had very little information in her books about it and I want to learn more. I've been researching on the web, but only found one article pertaining to hamsters, the rest were on dogs. I need to hear from anyone who's hamster had this or has this now. The vet never suggested putting them down, she did start the hamsters on treatments with medicine every 2 weeks. I'd give the name of medicine, but her writting is unreadable. I know it shortens their life, mine were born in Dec. '05 and their life expectency is 1-2 yrs. The other thing I know is this is hereditary.

Here are some of the signs we have: excessive drinking & urination, increased appetite, abdominal enlargement (belly), weight gain, excercises less, weakness, hair loss (ours is almost bald), darkening of the skin, and thin skin (see veins). I think my neighbor's dog died from this too after I learned the symptoms. Syrians and dwarfs alike get this.

My dog had this disease, and it did shorten his life - but he still lived to be 12 years old. On the bright side, he was happy and playful with medication, and I loved him very much.

So while I can't give you any more info on hamsters with this disease, I want to offer my sympathies, and I hope your hamsters live long and happy lives.

Did the hamster have some symptoms? What are the symptoms of cushings? I have a golden hamster. My hamster seem healthy, although she seems lacking energy compared to other hamsters I've had long ago.

I'm sorry to say but he/she will pas soon. Spend as much time as you can to make his last few days Happy. My 1st hamster Roscoe had a tumor. My2ND cookie died on her own. Now Flip my dwarf is my current one just a few months old is still living. Remember everything must die at some point then we go on to a happy, better place.

I am so sorry to hear about your poor hamster, but I thought you knew everything there was to carrying for them, you were sure quick to tell me all that I was doing about mine. Don't be so harsh and try to not assume that you know everything before barking up the wrong tree. I am sorry again for your hamster. I hope you find the answer you are looking for.

Cushing's disease is Cushing's disease in any animal. The kind of animal is irrelevant.
