Girlfriend, have you come to the right place!! For two years, I taught "Monster", by Walter Dean Myers. The connection that I found via media was a true life story of a sixteen-year old African American young man who resides in Florida and was accused of the murder of an elderly white female tourist. This was a documentary filmed by HBO. The time frame was about 4-5 years ago. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the name of the documentary since our school board has declared that "Monster" is too much for an 8th grader. (?!) If you go online HBO and provide some of these details, you might find this video. Just to clear up the question you might be asking - the young man was accused however, the court found him NOT GUILTY. As the story closed, a news report is broadcasted to indicate the 'real' killer was located and charged....he looked nothing like the young man who was accused. It was a very sad, sad story and everybody was in tears as they watched. But how elated we were to find the young man was innocent. This is the closest media representation to the story I have seen or heard.
