I was a Sony fan during the PS1 days, but I skipped the PS2 completely because I was very angry at them for killing the Dreamcast - no joke. Thus, I got an Xbox instead, but I won't deny they were a lot of games that I really wanted to play that were only available only in the PS2. Back then I said to myself when the PS2 gets really cheap I will get one. Well, the price is down now, and most of the best games for the PS2 are $20 or less. However, I find myself in the same predicament today. The only next gen console I want to own is an Xbox360 when it comes down in price, which won't happen for at least another year.

So my question is: should I buy a PS2 to hold me till the Xbox360 comes down in price? Is the 7 year console worth buying now that the PS3 is out?

In response to some of the answers I will have to say that I'm currently a college student and I don't have a lot of disposable income to afford a $400 Xbox360 plus $60 games at the moment. That is why I have to wait for a price drop. And with that in mind there is no way I can afford a PS3.

My main reason for buying a PS2 is to play all the great games that I missed in the last 7 years.

no u should save your money and buy a xbox 360 because it has some of the best games in the world right now for example Gears Of War is a game of the year and another game of the year is Lost Planet.

That's tough, man. I already have a PS2.

I would say go ahead if you want to, but I would be cautious since you're still in college. Money is tight.

I wouldn't buy my games through retail, though. You can pay way less for games on Ebay. It can take some practice until you get comfortable with it. But it's worth it in the end. Some games come in used, but pristine condition. And I personally have gotten pretty good at removing scratches with toothpaste just in case one would come scratched, but I've never had to do that right out of the box. A lot of sellers except money orders too, in case you don't have a paypal or checking account.

I would buy the PS2 for now. It's cheap, and there aren't many games worth getting the PS3 for, at least until Kingdom Hearts 3 and the new Indiana Jones. GTA4 should be coming out for PS3 and 360. You'll have many games for the PS2 to last the decades that PS3 will have its high price.

Yes the PS2 is a great value now. They have a library that could keep you busy for 5 or 6 years! Not to mention the price is right, the graphics are very nice, and the games are everywhere used

If you don't already own a PS2 and don't plan on getting a PS3 I would most certainly go pick it up beacuse it's worth every penny and like you said many of the best games at on the greatest hits series for $20 or you can buy them used.

The PS2 has a lot of life left in it and is a tremendous value. I was in the same boat as you. I felt the PS1 really went into "rip-off" mode toward sthe end, and I felt no loyalty to them. The X-Box is superior to the PS2, but God of War is awesome and SOCOM and a few other PS2 exclusives. It will probably be plenty to tide you over until you upgrade to the 360, which I recommend over PS3.

No dont be cheap and stuck in the past, get a XBOX360.
You will get more value for money if you connect to xboxlive which adds more modes to games and has a huge amount of downloadavle content, and is way more fun and challengin to play and talk to ppl

Yes, you should buy PS2. They have great games for it. I would personally recommend Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas if you buy it.
