Toxic blood does exist. I don't watch the show so I can't tell you about the story line. Blood poisoning is a result of toxic blood. Peritinitis is another toxic blood type. It causes lock-jaw sometimes. Houdini died from toxic blood. He bleed internally and the blood started to rot and caused an infection that killed him. Gangrene is another toxic blood problem. So yes, it is real.

Although extremely rare, neurotoxin-like gases can form in the blood after a series of chemical reactions take place. However, the patient would also die, unlike in last night's episode of Grey's. The high concentration of toxin in her blood, most likely dimethyl sulfate, would have surely killed her.

It totally rocked. I loved how they were able to bring denny back and incorporate a "reunion" of sorts for Denny and Izzy. I thought it was very creative and I spent most of the hour bawling... With regards to one of the posts that is weery of whether the medical aspects are realistic. I assume you are questioning the ability of a patient to recover after being "dead" for so long. I can assure you that there are many well documented real life cases where people have survived due to drowning in cold water (severe hypothermia) even after being technically "dead" for mor than 3 hours. It does happen. Richards line was so dead on..."She is not dead until she is WARM and dead!" The only disappointing thing I found was the implication that it was an attempted suicide. That bothered me a little.

I mised the show last night, but you can get a toxemia from poisons certain bacteria put out if they get into the blood. There are other toxins that can get into the blood too.
