Anyone considering New Orleans and Katrina 'old news' is, at the very least, ignorant as hell or maybe truly doesn't care about the condition of that region.
The federal govt must assist in the recovery. If you haven't visited the city or the region then you have no idea how extensive the damage was and still is. Thousands of homes are destroyed and uninhabitable. So take your self-righteous indignation and pull-yourself-up-by -your- bootstraps mentality and shove it up your ***.
However, Dubya's funtime-happy-war-as-a-way- to-funnel-money-to-his- Halliburton -buddies-apparently -takes-precedent.

To every American's shame, we let them.

Why is it that some people think Katrina only hit New Orleans?? Talk about selfish people. How about the people that paid in to their Flood and other insurances for years and got beat out of what THEY were owed? I'd say New Orleans got more of their fair share of OUR tax money...that was wasted on luxuries by people who shouldn't have gotten anything in the first place! And look how they 'thanked' places like Houston for all the kindness and generosity they were shown. Murder rate doubled. Care to hear of some of the horrors that white people went through down there? I doubt it.
Yep, I think it was a wise thing that Bush did not mention it in his speech. No...we certainly haven't forgotten Katrina and what she did to many. Not just those in New Orleans.

Edited to add: Rat...even though I live on the coast....I agree with you. I would NOT expect any hand outs. I hope one day to move away from here.

READ MY LIPS!!---The Victims of Katrina are all of the people still subsidizing lazy opportunistic loser TRASH!

The Yucatan of Mexico was wiped out! With almost no Government help it was re-built in a few months!
We had worthless trash living on luxury liners who were too good to go out and clean up the streets in front of their little slice of heaven! The GARBAGE considered itself too good to pick up any trash! I have come to truly feel anger about the idea of helping any Hurricane victims. If you live on the Gulf Coast, you need to be ready to handle the reality of the weather yourself! Government bailouts for such a predictable event is a bad joke on the rest of the US!!!
Local States and Communities need to shoulder the responsibility!

Because the only problem with New Orleans at this point is the idea that there is a problem. Pick yourselves up and get on with life - we don't need to dwell on this any longer. It was a disaster that was (wrongly) turned political. Stop milking the dead cow.

Old news. It didn't ocurr in the year and a half preceeding his State of the Union address. He discussed it in the last State of the Union (2006) when it was recent news.

I'm sorry, it's not "old news" when people still can't get back in their homes. And, yes, protocol is local, state, federal, but federal help had already been asked for as it was a disaster area.

Bush didn't mention it because he did an awful job on it, and didn't want to remind us all of it.

Was he supposed to??? Old news dude! Not to mention that the US government is like third in line for protocal for disasters! Local government first and then Feds, but only when called on to do so!

Because there is no longer a problem in New Orleans. LOL

Because it is not one of the most pressing political issues this year as it was last year. It does not mean it is not important.

Old news. Thank God some of the Katrina "victims" are leaving Houston and our crime rate is going back down.
