Vietnam is seen as a communist or socialist country because it's government is still centrally controlled (communist). What many fail to realize is Vietnam has a market economy, like the U.S., which is thriving and growing at an incredible rate.

China and Vietnam both have central controlled governments and market controlled economies. Both countries seem to have figured out something that works, even though many would find it controversial, because they are currently the two fastest growing economies in the world.

Before my recent visits to Vietnam, I had though like many others that Vietnam was a backwards country blinded by communist propaganda. My opinions have changed considerably since my visits. I now consider Vietnam to be very progressive and forward looking. Vietnam will continue to develop rapidly and soon become a key player in the world economy.

I believe that Vietnam's communist government knows that their control over the country is coming to and end. The communists have progressively loosened their grip over the country and continue to allow more freedoms. In some ways, the Vietnamese now have more freedoms that myself as an American (then again, I do live in the People's Republic of California). Communism will eventually end in Vietnam without a shot being fired.

That's my two cents on your subject!

have to agree with the above poster. although i have never had any problems with the government, friends over there complain about corruption. (unlike the good old usa where that sort of thing is rare LOL). the future will probably be democracy. i just hope they hold on to a lot of the socialist ideals like women's equality, affordable health care, and swift justice for criminals.
