I’ve noticed that there are some landlords answering questions on this board and I’m sure that you’ve heard many excuses for why the rent is late (I’ve personally noticed that a car provides endless possibilities for late rent excuses).

My question is what is your most memorable late rent excuse?

My favorite to date is “My rent is going to be late because I need to pay for a DNA test”

I’m also interested in hearing from tenants what excuses they’ve used in the past.

One of my tenants had his apartment searched by police. (I was notified at like 4 in the morning, and not too happy let me tell you)

Apperently he had a friend of his come into his work with a gun, rob him, and they split the cash. The police found the cash and other stolen goods in his apartment. He was obviously arrested, and fired from his job. He was to be put on house arrest in 2 months (in the apartment he was living), but before he got on it, he never decided to find another job (or couldn't).

Anyway, after we gave him a 3day notice to pay or leave, his girlfriend came screaming at me that he shouldn't have to pay his rent because he didn't have a job and he couldn't afford it.

It happened four times, about 10 yrs ago, when my 2 roommates were my 2 younger sisters. I always had my rent money, as did my youngest sister. The one in the middle, though, never seemed to have hers...something about having to pay for gasoline, although her job was only 4 miles away. We got tired of covering for her, and then got embarrassed for paying late. We eventually got rid of the middle sister, and had a 2 bedroom apt where we were able to pay ontime. We had to pay a little extra deposit, though, b/c it was on our "record" that we had paid late a few times. Siiiigh. Ah, well...

My true excuse was that my purse was snatched with my pay check in it. I did pay half my rent on time, and my wonderful landlord waived any late fees. ( I signed up for direct deposit the next week.)

My managers have always been the interface to the tenants, so I haven't heard any. Their instructions were: there is no such thing as an excuse.
