Zola did an enormous amount of work in botany, and used what he learned to form his literary perspective. This is why, for example, in Germinal the title and the ending have to do with the harvest of a new age.

i would say sociology, as he studied and wrote about people,,,,, also perhaps phychology(sp),,, as he looked at the causes of actions /conditions of humans
