My son is 6 months old and he had been sleeping through the night from 3 weeks on until about a month and a half ago. He wakes up 1-2 times a night and wants a bottle to go back to sleep. I have tried comforting him and rocking him back to sleep without a bottle but there was no sucess. does anyone have any tips for me to get him to sleep through the night again because I am worried that the milk sitting on his teeth will decay them also. Thanks

I would also like to add taht my son is 22 lbs, 6 months old and he eats a bottle every 3 hours throughout the day as well as three meals of baby food. He is well fed during the day! And I realize this parenting thank you but I was just curious if anybody had experienced this before and had any tips they used.

ok i have to comment on some of these answers i am a mother of a 6 month old baby i do not have the answer on how to get your child back to sleep with out the bottle.
i have however been told to supplement with water because unless the baby likes water they will not want to wake up to it but my child does not sleep longer then 2-3 hours at a time at night and never has.
the pablum in the bottle thing didnt work for me...
my comment is about the letting your kids teeth rot because at least its not there permenent teeth.
well i totaly disagree with that because not only does it rot the baby teeth but the gums as well.
so when the permenent teeth are ready to come in they are already wrecked.
a childs baby teeth dont start falling out till they are around the age of 7-8 so can u picture all the torment your poor child has to deal with if they have rotted out baby teeth when they start going to school...... i myself find that to be child abuse!!!!

I'm not sure how to keep him from waking up or getting him back to sleep without the bottle. As for worrying about tooth decay, I would use some of that baby tooth and gum cleasener on him after his bottle. That would at least get the milk off there. I use it on my 4 month old before she goes to bed. Hope this helps. I know it's hard when they start waking up in the middle of th night again after they have already started sleeping through the night. Best of luck.

Babies go through the growth spur about this age, and therefore need to eat more. Do add rice baby cereal to his milk/formula at the last feeding especially. This will be more nutricious then a milk alone. This should help, babies go through the growth spur every couple of months, this greatly varies from child to child, but as they grow there is a need for an increased portions. You can ask your doctor in which growth percentile he is, and that should also give you some idea of how much he needs.

If I had a guess, I would think one of two things.

First, baby is not getting enough food in the day, and is hungry at night, in which case you should feed him more before bedtime, and if he gets up in the night, feed him milk and then wipe his teeth off with a wet cloth or you can only give him just water, that will not hurt his teeth any.

Second, he may be feeling anexity being away from you. babies that age sometimes need the reassurance that mom, or dad, is close by. Check on him, rub his back, sing softly to him, but try hard not to pick him up, he needs to re-learn to console himself back to sleep. I know, easier said than done.

if his teeth decay- then so what for now, they're not his permanent teeth.

if he is hungry, he needs to be fed.

what you can probably do is to give him a heavier meal before he sleeps- more cereal than millk but that may make him uncomfortable as well as upset since he may not digest it properly.

you can also try feeding him water at these times.

i give my son his milk. he gets up 2 times in the early morning for milk.

-Is he getting teeth?? My son did this while teething. Try a bottle of water, that has helped with my son.
-Try laying him down with a pacifier 3 times, and if he wont go back to sleep, THEN give him a bottle.
-Also, it seemed when I fed my boys more before I put them to bed, they would wake up more.

I would feed him right before bed, and then do a "dream feed" when you take him out of the crib and gently give him the bottle around 10:30 or 11 (or right before you go to bed). This will usually hold him until his morning bottle.

Yes, first off if i was you i would STOP the rocking now because he will get attached to that then you will find yourself doing that EVERY NIGHT over and over threw the night. When my son stoped sleepin threw the night the doctor said its because his stomach is growing so there for he needs to be eatin more. So he gave me the advice to but baby cerial in his milk to make it a little thicker so it will stay on his stomach longer and he will sleep. write back and tell me how it works! GOOD LUCK

I would like to know the answer to this too because I have the exact same problem with my 5 month old. It is soo frustrating. My doctor told me to feed her cereal right before she goes to sleep but that didn't help. My friend told me that she is going through a growth spurt and it would end eventually.

a warm bath, and a box fan works wonders. my daughter sleeps allll night long and i ofen have to wake her up in the mornings, it drowns out all the noise. They are at this age where they wanna know everything that is going on, and when then hear something, they wanna see what it is. Just put the fan in a corner facing away from the crib.
