Owl is known in many cultures as a symbol of wisdom. This is because Owl can see what others cannot which is the essence of true wisdom. Where others are deceived, Owl sees and knows what is there. Owl is telling you to use your powers of perception, your silent power of observation of the present situation. Owl can bring you messages in the night through dreams and meditation. Pay attention to them as they always bring the truth to enlighten your present situation.

The common school of thought around most of the world is that if an Owl calls your name it is a sign that you are going to die. 'Buds Girl' was partially correct generally hooting is no more that just hooting. But according to which culture you come from, or continent you are from there will be varying myths legends. I will list several for you, just in case you are curious:

1. In many pagan belief systems the Owl embodied both wisdom and mortality, and was related to different celebrations base around the 'Day of the Dead'. And also had association with such Goddess's as 'Lilith, Athene, Minerva, Blodeuwedd,
Anath, and the Owl eyed Goddess Mari. (With most of these it was associated with the Crone aspect).

2. The Algonquin Indians believed that the Owl was representative of the North Wind their creator, also a bird of death and also representative of winter.

3. Babylonians believed that hooting owls were the ghosts of women that had died in childbirth calling to their lost children.

4. Christian legend insisted that the Owl was one of 'three disobenient sisters' who defied the Judeo-Christian God, and was so transformed into a bird that could never again look into the sun.

I hope you found this research fun and informative.

Usally to most other cultures owls are seen as wise omens. You shouldent get rid of him because he is probably an owl who is either mating or looking for mice. Owls, unless eagle owls are too small to attack and eat cats. I wouldent worry at all about the owl, most of this is just plain superstition. There is no real evidance that anything is pure bad luck. A more likely bird to be seen as a bad omen will probably be a crow, or a raven. Just leave the owl be to his own business he wont be any problem.

I think that I heard that in a movie once. I'm not sure what to believe, but never mistake it as unimportant. An owl is mostly a night time creature, so depending on the time of day, it means something. If it was early morning or just before sundown, then you can dismiss it. It means late hunting session or an early riser. If it was about 10 am then you better pray nothing bad is gonna happen!

Owls are all around and their hooting is just that- hooting. Now a bird hitting a window means someone you know will be dying soon, I've witnessed that one. It's a real bummer so I won't talk about it. My Grandmother had it happen too, then her husband got killed. Strange, but true.
