How do you know determine a DOS attack?

if your website is attack by DOS? what are the standard methods used to determine this?

Depends on the device. But ususally you can check your access logs and see if you are getting an unusually high number of hits from a single IP address. That would be one of the most basic attacks. If that is the case, then just block that IP address.
