OK ignore the first two answers i know how to, I've done it many times at work both on desk and on a cashregister (don't worry i worked there and it was only for fun)
any who
first take one paper clip and bind the first strait segment and the second after it bends the first time and bend it strait so you have a little handle kind of deal, then bend about 1/4 of an inch from the point of the paper clip and try to bind it al the way back 180 degrees
this is what your going to use to turn the lock, well call this the turner
next take another paperclip and completely unbend it, once done with this bind the very tip of the paper clip only like 10 degrees this is what you push the tumblers in place with.
well call this the pick
OK u should be ready to start picking
you might want to try several ways to do this depending on the lock its self, slide the pick all the way to the back of the lock, push up enough so that you can slid the turner in under it, try to get it so that your not pushing any tumblers up with both in,
next you want to turn the turner so that there is slight presser in the direction that the lock normally turns.
third quickly slide the pick out with pressure going up on the tumblers, you will not get it the first time so try many times once u get it you'll have an overwhelming feeling of joy come across you and you might shout yes Finlay but hay we each react differently.
please note that not all locks are the same, you will have to look at the lock to know where the tumblers are at.
if you have an Q's just ask

A paper clip wont work thats a myth.. Try a very thin pair of siccisors. And ignore Dark 5 Dragon below me he because thinks hes James Bond or some special agent . You cannot pick a lock with a paper clip I promise you..

You might try a similar key. Many desk style locks are keyed the same or similar enough that other desk or cabinet keys will open them. As long as you can fit the key into the lock, try that key. I have had a lot of luck with filing cabinets. Should that fail, you can get the number off of the lock and call a lock smith. The Smith may be able to cut you a key based on the number and name of the manufacturer. As a last resort, a screwdriver and a hammer will open it, but with some damage.

There many ways to pick a lock one way is to take a screw driver and take it apart. Once the knob is off take a small screw driver and stick through the tube and twist it to the right and you should be able to get in. This may take a very long time, but it is more sufficient and will not break your lock in the process.
