Why do Bands Need Guitars?

THe simple answer is that modern pop/rock music has developed around the electric guitar. Like others have said, it is versatile, portable, works as a lead and background/chord instrument, and is much "edgier" than other instruments that have preceded it. It's also a great, portable, accompaniment instrument to the voice, as it replicates the general range of a human voice without getting in the way, and leaves the musician free to do other things (like sing). Compare this to most string instruments, where you couldn't really sing and play at the same time, or with a piano, that's not portable (even keyboards aren't really portable the way that a guitar is).
Guitars are also the base sound of rock/pop music, so people expect those sounds in modern music. While other instruments color, or can play dominant roles (like the piano, or keyboards/electronic instruments in many genres today), audiences who listen to pop/rock simply expect a guitar.

They are cool, have many sounds, versatile instrument, and best of all, the person playing it makes the sounds by the way he/she holds it, dances with it, moves and struts with it and what would a band be without at least two of them.?

There are TONS of bands in this world that don't use guitars. So to answer your question: Bands DON'T necessarily NEED guitars.
