Throughout the state of Tamilnadu autorickshaw drivers rarely charge as per the fare meter. If you try to engage an autorickshaw, its driver will ask exhorbitant rate and if you do not agree, he will ensure that no other autorickshaw come near you. The political leaders of Tamilnadu have miserably failed to tame the autorickshaw unions for more than a decade.

Why in Tamilnadu only you are speaking !! Its the same almost every where in our country.
If I become CM there would be lot more to be done. If the main system is straightened all these would be normalised automatically.

Motivate the community to boycott the autorickshaws until the drivers negotiate. If the Union of drivers do not negotiate, the rickshaws can eventualy be put out of business by lack of use and community dislike. The drivers think they can act like that because there is no other competition. Bring some in.
Start a not for profit organization that fixes up older or disguarded rickshaws and make a fleet of them to operate in the areas where most of the price scamming is happening. If you made this a community project, welders, fabricators and mechanics would come out of the woodwork to help you because nobody likes being hustled.

If I am elected as CM of Tamilnadu I will ban the autorickshaw itself. Instead I will connect the city with metro services.

I sympathise with the auto-ricksha drivers. The practice of violating the metre is affecting them too. If only they are willing to be engaged as per the metre fare, many would like travel in autos even for small distances. Now, they do not want to do that for fear of being fleeced. For long distance travel also, the Chennai passengers have learnt the technique of hard bargaining with them. Since the number of auto rickashaws are more, the auto drivers cannot afford to demand too high lest the passenger prefer some other autowala. The fall out is the loss of business for them. Their Union Leaders are teaching them the benefit of adhering to the metre discipline. Most of the autowalas are governed by the CITU. Even in the States like Kerala and W.B, they adhere to some norm; they do not fleece. The sooner they learn the benefit of plying as per the metre for even small distances, the better for them.

I think Tamil Nadu need to change in many ways. I understand Auto rickshaw drivers are a headache to the people there. It should be resolved. At the mean time Tamil Nadu need a change in many part of their system. The politicians and politics in Tamil Nadu are shame to India. Jayalalitha and Karunanidi should be removed from politics....for ever.

What way CM is involved. There is a police force and enough laws to stop these kind of things. Unfortunately those who have to do this have only moustaches and spine.
