I love bands/artists like Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, The Byrds, Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band, The Band, Blue Cheer, Dylan, The Chocolate Watchband, Cream, The Doors, The Moody Blues, etc... However I was born in '79 so getting into a lot of these bands has required some real effort and investigation. I am hoping someone more familiar with the music of that era could turn me on to bands and or albums that truly embody and epitomize the sound and feel of the 60's.

You can't have '60s (and early '70s) music without folk, soft rock, and protest in there
These were the most popular but you'll find lists online of the deserving but "obsure."
Try for some of those anthology CDs, Rhino puts out a lot of those, but usually of the more "bubblegum music" variety.

Mamas and Papas
Peter, Paul, and Mary
Joan Baez
The Kingston Trio
Pete Seeger
Simon and Garfunkel
Joni Mitchell
Donovan
Gordon Lightfoot
Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young) // Buffalo Springfield
John Denver
Arlo Guthrie
James Taylor
The Seekers
Taj Mahal
Richie Havens
Country Joe McDonald and the Fish
Tim Buckley
Harry Chapin
The Limeliters
Don McLean
and though you may laugh, this last guy put out some sweet music: Michael Nesmith

I too LOVE that kind of music and one album you could check out is the Forrest Gump soundtrack. It has a lot of great songs from that era. It's one of my personal favorites. My 2 favorite groups are the Doors and the Grateful Dead. You can also check out the group Phish. They're not from the 60's but if you like the Dead then you'll probably like them as well. They are a new version of the Dead. And by the way I was born in '77 but my parents brought me up around that kind of music. If there are any more questions you have you can e-mail me. Good Luck!

Try Country Joe and the Fish-Electric Music For the Mind and Body album. Some say the album was dipped in LSD. Also Donovans'-Gift From A Flower to A Garden album is great

If you want to feel the essence of the hippie era, you should listen to an album by Vanilla Fudge. I'm not sure if they have more than one but it is the one that has Ticket To Ride on it.
