Both have been excellent for Pompey this season and are, as you say, the main reason the team is so high up the league. I can only assume that the manager is thinking in terms of the future and that James and Campbell are considered to old in the longterm. This makes some sense, but I would always play the inform 11 myself, and on that basis Campbell would be in the side and James would be on the bench.

Hes preparing for Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010, so its clear that hes looking for players to peak at these competitions. Campbell and James are very good players who can still do a decent job not only on international level but in the Champions League as well. Too bad they're well into their 30's and the same reason why Beckham is out I reckon. Same applies for Gary Neville except England can't find another solid right-back.

Friendlies are the time to try out new faces. Good players as they are,the likes of Campbell and James won't be around forever, and at some stage new faces must be introduced to the team. By the time World Cup/ European Championship Qualifying games come around a few of those new faces tried in friendlies are bound to have been good enough. OK,it's tough on the 'old sweats',but that's the world we live in. International Football is no different in that respect.

I have to agree with Mclaren on this one. The fact that it is only a friendly does not make it that big of a deal. Besides I do not think that James and Campbell will be at the best anymore when the Euro tournament starts. So I would rather bring the young and new guys in now and give them enough interntional exposure so as to be ready when the tournamnt comes around.Go Stevie G.

THIS IS EASY TO ANSWER: Its because steve mcClaren is useless, he was useless at BORO, and even more so as Sven's number (lets not forget what a waste of time and money he was), and now he's even worse as the England manager.... Robinson is best an average goal keeper, James has played exceptional this season as has Campbell, its about time McClaren picked his 11, and played them together every opportunity he can, a bit like the successful teams do!, I like the previous answer he;s getting ready for the next Euor's and world cup, do you honestly think he will even get us there let alone stand any chance!!!

Bring back Calamity James ? No way !

Anyway, we're playing a friendly so what we should do is try out some new players. What would be the point of giving Campbell or Calamity a game (even though they are both in good form) ?

James understandably can be left out. He didn't play at all in the world cup, and I think he's too old anyway. But to leave Campbell out is horrendous! He may be getting on a bit, but he's still one of the best defenders in England!

Andrew Strauss (capt), James Anderson, Ravi Bopara, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Andrew Flintoff, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior (wkt), Ryan Sidebottom, Graeme Swann I would really want to pick Bell but I suppose we should see how Bopara goes in the first test (i like Bell) There's no way id ever pick Monty Panesar ever. If we need a 2nd spinner it has to be Rashid. I reckon it'll be a contest between Rashid and Sidebottom for the 11th spot. Rashi might bring more variety and he can bat, but Sidebottom is very experienced and knows his art, they'll probably go with him. There's no Harmison, Vaughan or Shah, thats interesting

unbelievable,isn't it?
i've seen hernia patients and pregnant hostages dive faster than robinson. david james has been exceptional this season for pompey. when they have shown signs of weakness, he's stepped up with some breathtaking performances.
i can only imagine it's because of that pitiful haircut he was sporting a few months back.

as for sol campbell...great player, still good enough for pompey, but i think he's lost half a yard. that's the difference between winning and losing on the international stage.

my grandad let me answer this. I think this because if you look at the way robinson has been playing over the season so far Robinson he has let more goals in than James so i think james is the better of the two but on the other hand see what happends at the end of the season
