Was one always nipping at the other one's prose?

One cold and stormy day Jack and Robert were down at the pub debating the end of the world. While taking nips from his bottle, Jack bemoaned the whole "global warming" issue (he was a man ahead of his time, don't ya know) that Robert, in an attempt to cheer him up...wrote the following:
Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
Jack was warmed by the poem.

Robert and Jack were born out-of-wedlock to a woman by the name of Hoar Frost. I never met her but people around here say that she was as cold as ice.

they are first cousins, thrice removed. however, they both did/do well in snowy new england.
