100 or more cubicles with desk, telephone and headset.
100 or more people sitting (one per desk) making or receiving calls all day every day.
several types of call centres - outbounds for selling or doing surveys, inbounds for enquiries or complaints.
And I have worked in ALL 4 types.
Surveys were the best - I was there about 1 year.
I did Complaints as well - spent 5 long years there and hated every minute.
Sales was the worst - I only lasted 2 days.
And enquiries was interesting - did a 4 month contract and rather enjoyed it.
inbound could also be the technical helpdesk - which I have not done.

Usually one huge room, or a group of rooms. Perhaps separated by cubicals for some soundproofing.
It is where a group of people take phone calls from customers. Often it is technical support or customer service. Often there are dozens, even hundreds of phone lines. The employees sit all day and answer calls from customers.
The employess almost always have a computer where they research answers and/or place orders, fix problems, etc.
Some people use the term for outbound sales groups also. In those, the employees are calling to try to sell something. Think of those nasty telemarketers that always call to sell you some overpriced piece of trash at dinner time.
You may also hear the term "boiler room" associated with this. It is a more derogatory term for the same thing.

A call centre or call center (see spelling differences) is a centralized office used for the purpose of receiving and transmitting a large volume of requests by telephone.
A call centre is operated by a company to administer incoming product support or information inquiries from consumers. Outgoing calls for telemarketing, clientele, and debt collection are also made. In addition to a call centre, collective handling of letters, faxes, and e-mails at one location is known as a contact centre.
A call centre is often operated through an extensive open workspace for call center agents, with work stations that include a computer for each agent, a telephone set/headset connected to a telecom switch, and one or more supervisor stations. It can be independently operated or networked with additional centres, often linked to a corporate computer network, including mainframes, microcomputers and LANs. Increasingly, the voice and data pathways into the centre are linked through a set of new technologies called computer telephony integration (CTI).
Most major businesses use call centres to interact with their customers. Examples include utility companies, mail order catalogue firms, and customer support for computer hardware and software. Some businesses even service internal functions through call centres. Examples of this include help desks and sales support.

You have many answers and they are all correct but for some joker, so it could be any one particular activities or a combination of many activities, service can include highly train experts helping you with any technical difficulties with any product.

In an 'in-bound' call centers, employees or call-center agents/associates receive calls from customers to answer their queries or to carry out a transaction or to solve their problems (e.g. tech support)
In an 'out-bound' call centers, call-center agents call up current/prospective customers to either sell new services or to provide information about new products/services.
In a 'captive' call-center, employees make calls to customers of the same company, whereas in a 'third-party' call-center, employees make calls to customers of a different company (for example, employees of Indian call-center companies FirstSource/WNS/etc calling customers of US multinational banks)
