I'm not sure of the total number, but that area of north America has the highest diversity. Actually The north Eastern united states, just east of the Appalachian mountains is the are with the most amphibian species north of the equator.

There are nine species of salamanders and nine species of toads and frogs. The only amphibian species known to be non-native to Maine is the mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus), which also is the state’s largest amphibian.
