Sometimes my Operating System becomes unstable and I can't correct the problem. I have to install O.S. once again with all installed softwares and drivers. This becomes very tedious. If there is a way out of this such that we could backup our system with all installed softwares and drivers and get them back to work even after we need to format hard drive. To add to this I also want to know whether we can save ASR file on Removable storage media other than a floppy disk.

You don't really provide enough information to give a full answer, but the long made short is that yes, you can backup your system in such a fashion by using removable media such as a tape drive and any of a number of backup software applications. An even better solution is to use a removable hard drive plugged into a firewire or USB port. (Many small to medium sized business are moving to removable hard drives for backup solutions in place of tape.)

You mention "ASR"; three letter acronyms carry an awful lot of meanings so it would be helpful if you were more specific. Are you running on an Apple OS or Windows or ...? You may want to repost your question with more information such as the type of system, the OS (including version), and what hardware options you already have in place.

You can't backup programs which are not Windows' applications. The size of the final image depends on the program to be used for backup. For example True Image by acronis can compress an initial file up to 60% percents.
