What is the best lock to use on your home? I want one that is very strong and pick resistant and basically just the top-of-the-line.

Also, do you recommend using latches or chains, or are these just a waste of time?

Consider a dual lock system. This type has a dead bolt as well as a latch locking mechanism.

There are also locks that require that you enter a numeric code.

Chains only help if you want to open the door to see who is on the other side. They will not stop someone who is going to break down the door. At least with a dead bolt the intruder will have to break the door frame

I'm going to assume there is a window/lite running along side of the. The reason for having the inside keyed is so the window cannot be broken. Someone could then reach in and turn the thumbturn which unlocks the door. I do understand your point about exiting the door in an emergency though. For now just hang a key out of reach and out of sight. Next I would consult with the landlord and explain your concerns. Good Lock.

More importantly, you want a steel door, with a steel frame that is secured into the foundation. No matter how good the lock, if you have a wooden frame, it can easily be kicked in.

Find a lock that uses an unusual style key, they are usually less easily picked. Also find one that can be set flush with the door. If it is set out side, they are easily knocked off and removed. If you want to know what else NOT to get, talk to the fire department. They are trained on forced entry and will tell you what is easy and what is hard to get through.

There was just a feature on our Consumer Alert segment on the evening news about lock bumping. Evidently, it is all over the internet and it is easy to insert a key into most manufacturer's locks, bump it with a hammer or blunt object and the lock opens. (Google it). Schlage is one of those manufacturer's making a lock that cannot be bumped. Lock picking has become so yesterday when it is faster and easier to bump the lock to gain entry.

Typical residential locksets are Kwikset or Schlage. Top of the line for residential use could be BEST, they are very high end.

As far as additional security I prefer a screen security door on the outside.

schlage is very good, but if your freaked out that someone's gonna get you, no lock can make you feel secure.
