You're thinking Jamestown, Virginia. But that's the first PERMANENT English settlement. The first English settlement in the U.S. was actually at Roanoake(not sure if I spelled that right). Roanoake is called the "Lost Colony" because no one knows what happened to the first settlers to inhabit it. You can look it up on wikipedia under "Lost Colony"

An attempt was made to settle by the British at Roanoke Island, North Carolina in the late 1580s. When those who had gone to England for supplies returned all traces of the colony had disappeared. There have been several theories to explain this, but "The Lost Colony" did not get established.

In 1607 the British did establish the first permament settlement in America at Jamestown, Virginia.

Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement but the first English settlement was Fort Raleigh on Roanoke island. Some people believe that the people either were killed by native Americans or assimilated with them.
