I am trying to find ideas that are high school appropriate. I keep finding middle school mice projects and Im taking a freshman college class. I can't really think of any good ideas that would get me a decent grade and/or win any ribbons and what not? Any suggestions?+

are you looking at genetics ( breeding/) are you looking at physiology ( Size , mass and muscularture) are you looking at psychology? (Reactions?) Biology as in other things, like resistance to diseases etc. You might want to look at female vs male group dynamics. You would have three groups, male, female and mixed. Give the mice tasks such as food gathering, etc. nesting , maze skills etc. and see if there is differences in how a one-sex group behaves to another. What are the interactions?

I once saw white lab rats trained to play basketball. They set up a small enclosed court and put hoops at wither end that the rats could reach easily from their hind legs. The ball was a ball of wax they could carry in their hands and mouth about an inch wide, and every time they made a basket, food came out right under it as a reward. It was hilarious to watch them steal the ball from each other and slam dunk.

It's ambitious and will take a lot of time teaching the rats, but maybe that's worth a try!

Well first you need to know what you need mice for. If you're in AP biology then I'm guessing you've heard of the scientific method. The first step of which is to identify a problem...not find a test subject!!!

So figure out a problem, and then if you need to run test on a live subject consider you little friends.

The effect of aspartame would be very interesting since it's in so many sugar free products and may be linked to alzheimers. maybe make a maze give some dose of aspartame others none and see which can complete the maze the quickest and if the aspartame slows down the response over time..

How about designing a study to look at diet and weght gain? You could look at portion control, activity level, or type of food.

Well my friend did this one on Ferrets to see if they prefer a color. She made a maze and put red on one side and blue on another to see which one they prefer. I thought it was cool........of course we are in Middle school.....but it's a honors class and we use highschool text books........... does that count?
