I have a 4 port router, adding an 8 port switch (all Netgear). How should I connect these? I now have all 4 ports used up on the router, that's why I'm adding the switch to hook up more to network. I tried just removing one of the cables from the router and hooking up to switch, then hooking up router to switch, but that didn't work. Using Netgear FS116 switch.

Connect your router to the broadband cable modem, and then the switch to the router, and your PCs and other components to the switch.

A router acts as a junciton between two more more networks, (in your case, Internet to your LAN), which is different from a switch which is used to connect various devices (PCs, etc) to form a Local Area Network (your home network).

Depending on how your LAN is setup, you can connect some of those devices on the other ports of the router as well.

Just found this out this week. Connect the router to the cable modem and switch to router. The router assigns the IP for the computers and other devices on the network so it needs to be as close to the cable modem as possible so that all devices can access internet.

Remove all of the network cables from the router, and plug them into the switch. Use a seperate cable to connect the switch to the router. Plug the router into the cable modem. There is a good chance that your router might have to be reconfigured though.

Cable Modem --> Router --> Netgear FS116 Switch --> PCs/Devices

Your best bet is to plug all of your devices into the switch together. If you have a web/mail server that hooks to the outside world, go ahead and plug that directly into the router IF the router has a built in switch (not hub).

Hope that helps!
