While I am offended by both slavery and lynchings, I fail to see why people living today need to apologize for something that occurred generations ago...and that they had no say in or responsibility for.

The logic eludes me.

Let's look at this for a moment.

Let's say that my great, great, great, great, great grandfather killed someone in 1789. And, somehow, by quirk of fate, in 2007, I run into a distant relative of the victim. Why would I feel the need to ask that person to forgive my great, great, great, great, great grandfather for his criminal actions? Why would that person want me to do so?

Enlighten me.

Well, for openers, my ancestors who lived in America at that time were farmers, not slaveholders. Nothing for me to apologize for there.

Second, why should anyone apologize for something that their great-great-great-great grandfather may have done? The word "stupid" just doesn't do this item justice.

Third, what possible good would an apology do? Would it change history? No. Would it make life for the black people in America easier? No. Would it serve any good at all? No.

Fourth, as has been said many times before I posted this, when are the black people in America going to apologize to the others of their race for selling their ancestors into slavery to begin with?

Next I suppose you're going to ask when America is going to fork over the reparations.......

You SERIOUSLY need to get a grip, and a life.

Will black Americans ever ask their black African ancestors why they sold them into lynchings and slavery in the first place? Are any of these people who were involved even still alive? Will black Americans ever ask their Muslim friends why they are still conducting the slave trade, rape, and lynchings in Darfu, Rwanda, Somalia, Libya, Niger, and Chad? Do they really care or are they willing to do anything to help? The answer is probably the same for all these questions.

Considering my ancestors were in Europe at the time slavery was abolished, no.

Will black americans ever apologize for destroying my great uncle's shoe store back in the 60s during the riots?

I want ask for forgiveness for what I had no control over or took no part in and as for my ancestors if they had slaves that is now between them and their maker. Is it really that important to you for someone to ask for forgiveness for something that happened years ago? It is bad that things like slavery happens to anyone but black Americans are not alone. Some of my forefathers were most likely slaves also but that doesn't prevent me from succeeding in life today. There will always be some racist out there but it is only an excuse if anyone in the US says that racism is what prevents them from accomplishing life goals.

Well my ancestors came to America after slavery was already abolished, and they were treated just slightly better than black Americans...(3rd generation Irish) So my ancestors never participated in lynchings and slavery that I know of...

No, I won't. I'm not responsible for what anyone but me does, and you never were a slave, so stop inflaming racial tensions. If you want to do something to help black people, go to Sudan and free the black African slaves that racist arab muslims have today. You won't because you really don't want to help anyone, you are just trying to make white people feel guilty for something no living person did so you can blackmail them into what you call reparations. Blacks in America have it better than anywhere else in the world, and you are free to leave if you think you will like it better anywhere else. Go to Sudan and free the slaves there.

As someone who's great great grandmother came over from Europe during the 1900's, not me 'cause I wasn't alive then.

As some folks suggested, if folks were to forgive here's some that need to do so for their deeds:

Egyptians to the Jews for slavery
Italians to the Jews for slavery
Muslims to the Jews for slavery
Christians and Muslims for war based on religious differences
Jews to the Christians for killing Jesus

I think if these folks got over their problems, then let the dead resolve their issues in the hereafter. Beacuse judgement has already been done to those that committed their crimes.

Are YOU going to apologize for all the white people(farmers) that have been killed by blacks in Africa? They had farms and were raising crops to feed everyone down there. The blacks raped and murdered all family members. Now the blacks are starving because they are so stupid they don't know the first thing about farming. And this is happening NOW!! So...who owes who an apology?????
White Americans today owe nothing to the black population today. You would do well to listen to Bill Cosby and Larry Elder.

I'm not a racist, but will black Americans ever forgive their ancestors for selling them to white Americans?
Yes some were kidnaped, and some were abused beyond belief, but I think that America has and is doing everything that it can to make up for what slaves were put through all those years ago.
