You are always downloading something.
Every internet page is downloaded to your computer. This page you're viewing isn't actually 'on' the internet - Your computer downloaded it and your browser is displaying it to you from your hard drive.
It's the same for Youtube videos. The first time you watch it you'll notice that the red bar is just a little bit ahead of the play position, but if you decide to watch it a second time the red bar is usually already full because your computer is just replaying something that is already on your computer.
Over the years browser makers have made efforts to not call looking at internet pages and other browser activities 'downloading' because it might confuse people

Yes you could. Those are just the kind of sites viruses are liable to come from. You should keep your anti spyware system up dated, so it recognizes new threats, then they can;t get by the protection. I also got Windows Defender from Windows Marketplace, in the security link. It has a good firewall, and I have it set to up date at 3am, nightly.

Yes! Just by visiting a wesite and allowing cookies, java content or pop-ups you can allow embedded content which can pick up viruses. If you don't want to pay for the proper protection use Mozilla Firefox and AVG 7.5 virus ware.

Yes, there are somethings called drive-by-downloads, and they'll give you a virus, and all you have to do is visit a bad site.
