Do you have a "not so known" movie that never quite made it big but yet you think is just awesome?
I loved "Hearts in Atlantis", "Crash", and another goodie from Australia, pretty unknown is "Under the Lighthouse Dancing".
I'm pretty well up-to-date with watching movies from Blockbusters so if you have any good ones worth viewing I'd sure like to know! :~)
I'm not into horrors however...mysteries ok but demons and all that crap...no thanks!

But that's my point about "little" movies...usually the ones with the big promos sell tickets...less advertised ones don't, and as such (unless you live at the movies each weekend) you don't really catch them till they come to video. Obviously anyone who saw it could never forget it! :~)

The Sure Thing-starring John Cusack, Nicolette Sheridan, and Daphne Zuniga
PCU--starring Jeremy Piven, Jon Favreau
Swingers (wasn't really big until it came out on DVD/video)--starring Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn
Top Secret--starring Val Kilmer
Killing Zoe (it's not a horror film, but there is violence)--starring Julie Delpy and Eric Stoltz
Joe Dirt--starring David Spade and Brittany Daniel. It didn't get good reviews, but I thought it was hilarious (just don't expect any Oscar worthy performances or writing from it)
A Perfect World--starring Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, and Laura Dern
The Princess Bride--starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright (Penn), and Mandy Patinkin (I don't remember it doing well in the movie theaters)

I'm pretty sure Crash is well known considering it won an oscar for Best Picture and it's the #1 most rented movie on Blockbuster AND Netflix
anyway, my choice would be a 1971 made for TV animated movie called The Point. I would suggest getting your hands on a copy...amazing
EDIT: yeah I know it didn't do great at theaters, but I'm pretty sure it was a limited release. Half of my 40,000 student college campus saw it BEFORE it was even nominated. It's pretty big budget with an all star cast....not exactly the little movie that could. Maybe you're just labeling it as that because it was the underdog at the oscars
Yeah but look at the title of your question: "best little movie that never made it big?" I'm pretty sure winning best picture oscar is considered making it "big"

Wet Hot American Summer. It's a hilarious deadpan parody of all the late '70s/early '80s summer-camp movies, and it came out in 2001. Janeane Garafolo, David Hyde Pierce, Marguerite Moreau, Amy Poehler, and Christopher Meloni star in it, along with all of the players from that old MTV sketch show, The State.

Like Water for Chocolate. One of the very few movies that is an accurate rendition of the book from which it has originated, including the recipes found within the book. Some of it is in sub titles, however most of the movie is in english. It set in Mexico about one girl who challenges the cultural tradition of the first daughter remaining unwed inorder to care for the mother. It is a beautiful woven mixture of food, sex and passionate emotions.

Crash was really well known, actually, but it wasn't extraordinarily well advertised.
Hearts in Atlantis was a great movie, though very different from Stephen King's book.
Little Miss Sunshine was a great film, though well known in some parts.
Watership Down and Donnie Darko are two of my absolute favorite movies, neither are extraordinarily well known.

this is a good question. I think there are some sleeper movies such as "the Village" (some people seem not to like that movie though), "Man Who Would Be King" which I always thought didn't get the credit it deserves. There are many others I can't think ofl

"Shadowlands" with Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger!
"A Year in Provence" with the late John Thaw.
"I am David" with Jim Caveziel was good.
"Entertaining Angels: The Dorthy Day story" with Moira Kelly.
"Year of the Comet" with Penelope Ann Miller. (Great romantic comedy!! Only on VHS I think)
