Go to the START button on your computer click it then click CONTROL PANEL then click on USERS ACCOUNTS next click on your account there should be a little thing that says create password if you are the administrator the password will lock up the computer so only you can get into it. The previous comments are fine if what you are concerned with is people accessing your laptop while you're away from your desk.

If you are worried about people accessing your data if your laptop is stolen, you need to do something more. The problem is, someone who has stolen your laptop can pull your disk out in a matter of minutes and use their own computer to access it.

There are a number of programs which will encrypt your data so that if the laptop is stolen and the disk is removed the data will be meaningless without a password.

There is an active open source effort in the area of data security and privacy. You might check out the program TrueCrypt, a free, open source encryption program which should be more than enough for most situations.

If you are wanting to fully prevent from anyone accessing anything on your laptop then put a password in your BIOS. This will then prompt you for the password before Windows begins to load.
Depending on your laptop, to get into your BIOS hit the delete key or one of the F keys (F1, F10) Just remember the password cause it is difficult to fix if you can't remember the BIOS password.

Do this via user accounts, make other people use a guest account. Password protect your own. Use a screensaver with password on resume.
