Are you thinking of the hymn "Nearer My God to Thee"?

The story goes that the ships band played this hymn as a sort of "last farewell" once it became obvious that the ship was going under. I am not sure how factual this is or if it is just a myth. It is well know that the band kept playing throughout the night in order to prevent panic. They ultimately went down with the ship, since they were said to have opted not to board the lifeboats when given the chance.

The words to "Nearer My God to Thee" are a poem written around 1835-1840 by Sarah F. Adams. There are several melodies associated with this hymn, but by far the most common and the one you are thinking of, was written in 1856 by the American composer Lowell Mason. Mason is often said to be the "father of American church music."

I think the song they were playing is the hymn Nearer My God to Thee, which is what the actual musicians on the real Titanic were supposed to have been playing as the ship sank.
