First you need a digital thermometer. Before you get out of bed (the less you move or talk the more accurate) take temp. and chart it. The first part of the month it will stay pretty steady then it will drop one day and 1-2 days later it will jump higher than it started and stay high until period should start. You ovulate between the lowest point and the highest point. The temp. fluctuation has to do with your progesterone levels.

You have to take your temperature each morning at the same time each day as soon as you wake up with a basal thermometer and make a chart, your temperature shows a shift in it's pattern when you are ovulating and again after ovulation, showing if you conceived or not.
Done properly it will teach you to calculate your ovulation, the only catch is it usually tells you when you have already ovulated so you should accompany it with checking your cervical mucus or your vaginal sensations (dry, sticky, wet or lubricative).

The book Taking Charge of your fertility is great when you are wondering about BBT, just in case you want a better explanation; they also have a website: www.tcoyf.com

Temping is a great way to chart your fertility, but the limitation is that it can really only confirm ovulation rather than predict it (as cervical fluid can).

I highly recommend checking out the following resources: Fertilityfriend.com (software for free and purchase, online charting tutorial). Ovusoft.com (great software for purchase, many discussion groups). Books: Taking Charge of Your Fertility (associated w/ ovusoft) and Garden of Fertility. The first book, if not both should be available in the library.
