Elves are of the 'woods' and love the 'outdoors' ... trees, and flowers, generally. Dwarves are of 'metal' and love the 'underground' ... they mine silver, gold, and any other 'ore' ... and they 'don't get along' in general because 'metal' and 'wood' are different substances. That is why, in Tolkein's 'Lord of the Rings' series, when the Elf and the Dwarf become 'true friends' it is so meaningful. Tolkein was a good Catholic who 'fought' with C.S. Lewis, who was an Anglican (Episcopalian) all the time about their 'different religions' ... but the two men were actually very good, close friends ... and if an Anglican and a Catholic could 'get along in the real world and be good friends' then so could an Elf and a Dwarf in Tolkein's 'fantasy' world.

Yes, it is true. But I don't think you are asking about the same type of elves. Happy elves that you see working for Santa at the North Pole, or perhaps the ones making cookies in trees; these kinda of elves aren't real. There are, however, little people who would technically be considered dwarfs. For example, the Andy Milanakis (i know it isn't spelled right) is about a 27 year old man who looks like a 13 year old. He would technically be classified as a dwarf.

Dwarves don't like elves because elves laugh at their beards ;)
Actually, thinking about Lord of the Rings, elves can walk on snow, they don't get tired and they always have perfect hair - I think if I was a dwarf up neck in snow, I wouldn't be loving Legolas smugly scampering over the surface!
However I am not a dwarf ;p

Well in Lord of the Rings, which is more or less the foundation of which most all other fantasy books in this genre sprang from, dwarves and elves use to be great friends in the beginning of time, the dwarves teaching the elves of many ores and minerals of the earth ans how to smith jewelry and weapons.
::Most of the names and places I am about to mention will not have any meaning unless you've read the Silmarillion::
One of the Elf-kings. Thingol in the first-age had hired many dwarves to build his kingdom in Menegroth( thousands caves) since the dwarves were far more skilled with carving away caves than the elves of Doriath. Around the same time Thingol acquired on of the Silmaril Jewls and decided to have it placed into a necklace and once again called upon the aid of the Dwarves to place the jewl into a necklace.
Once the dwarves finished the necklace they decided they would keep it for their own king, so Thingol refused to pay for the work the dwarves had done with the caves until he recieved the Silmaril. Instead of complying they slew, Thingol, the elf-king of Doriath. The Dwarves tried to escape the caves but were killed one by one from the arrows and swords of the elves of Doriath.
Two dwarves did escape and returned to the dwarvish realm of Nogrod. The dwarves streched the truth a bit to make it seem like the dwarves in the caves were killed so they would not have to be paid. SO the Dwarves of Nogrod marched on Menegroth in a great host and a large battle took place in the caves and the dwarves retook the necklace of the Silmaril. As they were heading back to Nogrod a host of green-elves lead by Thingol's son-in-law, killed nearly all the dwarves, but some of the dwarves did escape into the forest where they were killed by what is suggested to be ents.
This is why the elves and dwarves do not get along. Since the dwarves slew the Elf-king, Thingol, which eventiually lead to the downfall of Doriath the elves forever distrust the dwarves. And since the elves distrust the dwarves and the entire dwarven host was destroyed they despise the elves.
Hope that helps

NO!
In fact, they are not in war. It is only in some books and films, because they are so different. The authors opposed them.
Elves live in a highly civilized society. They are wise masters of the fine arts, swordsmanship, marksmanship and magic. Most elves live in their ancient forests, but some elves chosen the ocean as a home instead of the trees. They became the NIX. They are water-fairies (sirens).
Dwarves are little people with beard (usually brown or gray). They live under mountains, in mines or in the mountains in their fortresses. Dwarf women are quite plump and NOT only attractive for dwarf men. :)) They mastered smithcraft, they create and use many of the legendary armors (e.g. mithril), and they are skilled fighters, especially with axes and maces. They have a little connection with the elves, but they prefer their rural and wild-nomad lifestyle.
So they are not in war, but often have rows about fighting methods and strategies. And they are only fairy tales of course... lol

Elves are usually admired among the humans and dwarfs disgust humans in many ways, it seems. I'm sensing a little jealousy in this field, anyone else?
