There are a few reasons for this. The first is that the clothes create a safety hazard and can get caught in drains or, if the clothing is too big, it can end up over someones face and cause serious injury or death. The second reason for this is that if you wear clothing in the pool, it clogs the fliters and drains. Fuzz and strings and other mateiral come off of the clothes and cause probelms for the maintence workers.

Loose clothing can easily be caught in drains and pull the swimmer under the water. (This can also be a problem when swimming with long hair.) Also - street clothes harbor more dirt and bacteria than do typical swimsuits. Few people would shower - then put back on their regular clothes before getting in the pool. Not to mention - the chlorine in the pool wouldn't be the best thing for your clothes!

Good question. Personally, I don't see a problem with a person wearing "street clothes" into a pool as long as the person isn't showing anything I shouldn't see, but I have to tell you that a swimsuit really is best for swimming in a pool because it dries out more readily than jeans or sweats would, it's made of a material that reduces drag better than anything else, and it's lightweight so it won't tend to "drag you down" like other clothes would. Make sense?

I suppose you could wear regular clothes to swim. It's not a common thing to do so, so people will stare at you. It will be heavy and not very comfortable. But if that does not bother you, and it is not prohibited for hygiene reasons, by all means, you should do what makes you feel comfortable. Nobody can or will force you to wear a swimsuit.
When I want to go for a swim, and I don't have my swimwear with me, nothing stops me from jumping in the water with whatever I'm wearing at the time.

wearing regular clothing in a swimming pool messes up the ph balance of the pool. The chemicals are put in there to keep bacteria out. Bacterias that make ppl sick. Try a wet suit used for surfing etc.

Its not a MUST to wear a swimsuit its just recommended due to the fact that regular clothes are much heavier when wet.

safety reasons- loose clothing can get caught and the swimmer could get pulled under. also if you wear denim the pieces shred and clog the drains. also if you are in a water park you are not allowed to wear denim b/c the pockets have metal things holding them and will scratch the slides and attractions. not to mention the fact that it is extremely uncomfortable to wear lots of clothing in the water.
