DC was chosen as a central location to help ease the tension between the southern and northern states. At that time the only states were the ones along the east coast and the spot where DC is was central.

After the constitution was signed congress started meeting in new york city. Now after the American Revolution there was a lot of debt that the states had to pay of so Tomas Jefferson(The writer of the declaration of independence, who wanted the capital of the US in the south) and Alexander Hamilton( First Secretary of the Treasury, who wanted the united states to assume all of the debt) made an agreement that the capital of the country would be in the south if the Country assumed all of the debt and started to sell bonds to help pay the debt.

When the founding fathers were setting up our government the larger states and smaller states were arguing over representation in Congress. So were the northern and southern states. Large states were wanting representation to be population based where small states wanted an equal number of representatives regardless of population. Southern states wanted to count slaves as part of their population. Northern states didn't want them to. So as part of the compromise they resulted our two branches of Congress was to be set up the way it is today. That is that one house has representation based on population (House of Representatives, or the Lower House), and one house with with equal representation. This is the Senate, or Upper House. Also in the compromise it was set that the nation's capital was to be established in, what was then considered, the south. That's why they took that piece of land on the Potomac and set up D.C. in that location.
*EDIT*
The answer below mine is also true. I just got tired of writing earlier, and ended where I did.
